GR Press Endorsements

Press endorsements usually have a consistent logic: go for the Republican except for unquestionably safe Democratic seats where the GOP doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell (e.g. the 76th House District). This keeps them in the Republican fold but lets them feel less like the toadies they really are.

There is one exception to the rule though: they will throw a Republican under the bus if he hasn't been playing ball with the party establishment. I should know, since they once endorsed me back in a 2002 house race. Being young and stupid, I thought this must have been due to my sterling qualities as a candidate. Then it was explained to me that it was more a dis-endorsement of the Republican incumbent because he wasn't following orders.

Which seems to explain the Robert Dean endorsement. They couldn't possibly like Dean, but they must really dislike Tietema because he's not an obedient GOP clone. In essence, the Press doesn't really give a shit about the candidates, they endorse the power brokers who keep the Republican legislators on a very short leash. The Press is just an enforcer for the GOP establishment.

The endorsement for Dean from the Press is no real shock here. The Grand Rapids Press (actually the three liberal editorial staff members) gushed with the confidence they have in Dean and all the positives from his past 2 years. What they failed to relay was the fact that Dean voted to raise taxes each and every opportunity he had. This despite a pledge he made to his constituents that he would not vote to raise taxes. Forgot to mention that didn't you boys? Remember the 5,000 signature's from those that wanted to recall Dean? Forgot to mention that too, didn't you? The Press suggests that Dan Tietema's idea about a part-time legislature "goes too far". I guess the other 47 states that have a part-time legislature are wrong! The old saying, "sometimes it's better to be lucky than to be good", certainly will come into play in this election. Robert Dean must be the luckiest politician in Michigan. Prop 2 in 2006 and Obama in 2008. It is because I admire a politician who works to get my vote (Tietema has knocked on my door 3 times in the last 9 months) that I will support Dan Tietema in November. You should too.
